THE WEEKLY DISH
For the week beginning Tuesday, July 1st, 2008.

Do you or somebody you know live in EXTREME messiness?  If so, this is the Weekly Dish for you!  “Reasons to Get the House under Control” by Sandra Felton is a list of 10 serious thoughts to ponder and put into action if your mess is out of control.  Read on, and pass along if this sounds like you or a friend!

1.     So the house will look better for company.  It is embarrassing to have people come over with the house in a mess.  When you work like crazy to hide the disorder, you have to keep some messy parts off limits. You fear they will go into a messy part.  That fearfulness takes the joy out of having visitors.  You also want to be able to call a repairman and not be embarrassed to let him in.  He’s not company, but still…

2.     So the house will look nice for you.  You are tired of living in all this clutter and ugliness.  It wears you out to see it all the time.  Although you have gotten used to it to some extent and you try to accept it, living like that takes a lot out of life.

3.     So the house will work better.  When you can’t find things, when you have to move one thing to put another down, when you don’t have enough supplies for what you want to do, the house is not working right.  You want a cooperative house.

4.     For a special friend.  You want to have you boyfriend over, but you don’t want him to see how you live.  You want to believe that if he really cares for you, he won’t care how the house looks, but you know that’s not true.  How the house looks reflects on you personally, even if you don’t think it should.

5.     So you can decorate.  You know it is ridiculous to bring lovely things into your house the way it is.  Sometimes you try, but your special things never look pretty because of the clutter.

6.     So you can get out without feeling guilty.  For a long time you have had ambivalent feelings about leaving the house.  On the one hand, you have denied yourself many outings to stay home and “do something about this house.”  On the other hand, you have looked for opportunities to do things outside the house just to get away from it.  You want to get the house in order so you can stay in happily or, if you wish, leave without feeling guilty.

7.     So you won’t have to work so hard.  People who don’t have messy houses don’t seem to work as hard as you do.  Doing the simplest job is a big deal in your house.  You spend a lot of time looking for things.  Just getting dressed can be a chore because you have to locate the clothes in all the disorganization.  You want life to be easier.

8.     To get others off your back.  Others are constantly nagging about how the house looks. Perhaps your husband has threatened to leave unless you get it cleaned up.  Perhaps he has already left.

9.     Legal reasons.  Some run into legal trouble because of their messiness.  Husbands have used their wife’s disorganized lifestyle as a way to gain custody of the children.  And sometimes neighbors call, or threaten to call, the zoning, fire, or health departments because they are concerned about the health risk or because they are repulsed by how bad the yard looks.

10. To overcome depression.  Life is hardly worth living when you feel as bad as this cluttered house makes you feel.  Your self-esteem has hit bottom.  You want emotional release from the depression, guilt, and anger you feel.

This list is out of Felton’s book, Organizing for Life.  This book teaches you why your house is messy and gives you solutions to clear the clutter.

ENJOY!
